Cockapoo Breed Information

A Cockapoo is a mixed breed dog consisting of Cocker Spaniel and Poodle breeds. You can get a Cockapoo puppy by breeding either a Cocker Spaniel with a Poodle, or two Cockapoos together.

Cockapoos typically grow to between 12 to 24 pounds as full grown adults, which is about twice the size of a Toy Poodle. Because Cockapoos do not breed true, even by AKC registered purebreds, they come a a very wide variety of colors and color patterns ranging from white, black, tan, red, beige, cream, silver, and mixtures of the above.

Before you buy a Cockapoo Puppy...

Many Cockapoo puppies suffer from a very specific health problem that is inherit from it’s parent breeds. Both Cocker Spaniels and Poodles often suffer from loose knees, which can be passed to offspring.

It is recommended that both of the Parents, whether Poodle, Cocker Spaniel, or Cockapoo be checked by a certified Veterinarian to check for this deficiency in the animals before they are bred. An ear exam and DNA test can be expensive for many breeders, but is necessary to assure the puppy’s health.

Questions to ask you Cockapoo Breeder.

As with many mixed breed dogs, buying your puppy isn’t as simple as asking for the AKC registration. You need to know a little bit more about your puppy, and it’s parents to assure that the pup has been bred by parents with good genes. A few sample questions to ask when buying a Cockapoo puppy are:

What to do when you receive your Cockapoo Puppy.

First things first, if you know the arrival date of your Cockapoo puppy you,re going to want to schedule a veterinarian appointment for the day of, or the day after you get him/her home. Why? Many “health guarantees” require that the pup is looked over by a veterinarian within one week (sometimes two days) of bringing it home. Many also come with a 7 day money back guarantee, and the early vet visit is going to let you know if your puppy has any major health problems before this window of opportunity closes.
